2010-W 1 oz Silver Eagle NGC PF69 Ultra Cameo
In 1986, the United States Mint created the Liberty Coin American Eagle bullion coin programs. They began striking a number of different size and weight coins in Gold and one One-Troy Ounce Silver bullion coin. These American Eagle bullion coins were struck to entice an international market to buy the US Mint’s offerings instead of coins from China, South Africa, or Canada. They are even more popular today than ever before.
The finish of the Proof and Uncirculated Silver Eagle bullion differs. Proof coins display exceptional detail and are generally struck at higher amounts of pressures. Proof coins have mirrored fields and frosted devices whereas the Uncirculated coins are simply either brilliant all over or satiny all over.
The design on the obverse on the American Silver Eagle bullion coin was originally created by Adolph Weinman and was first used on the 1916 to 1947 Walking Liberty half dollars. The Walking Liberty design depicts an allegorical representation of Miss Liberty. She is walking to the left. Her right hand is outstretched in friendship. Her left arm cradles a bundle of olive branches. It looks very similar to that early half dollar.
On the obverse, the word “LIBERTY,” appears on the upper periphery. On the right field is the phrase “IN GOD WE TRUST,” while underneath Miss Liberty is the date of striking on the coin.
The reverse utilizes the Heraldic Eagle design created by John Mercanti which uses an American Eagle in the center, with outstretched wings upward. There are 13 stars arranged above the eagle and in one talon are arrows and in the other talon are olive branches. Around the upper periphery is “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and on the lower periphery is “1 OZ. FINE SILVER – ONE DOLLAR.”
This coin is a 2010-W American Silver Eagle is a Proof coin, and the “W” mintmark indicates that it was struck at the West Point minting facility out of .999 Fine Silver. It has been graded as ‘Proof 69, Ultra Cameo,’ by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC).
NGC is a major, third-party grading service. Its opinions of grade are well-respected worldwide. The ‘Proof 69’ grade means this coin is one point away from being perfect while the ‘Ultra Cameo’ designation means that there is great contrast between the mirrored fields and the frosted devices.
