The American Silver Eagle bullion coin program launched both Uncirculated and Proof silver eagle back in 1986. The coins are very popular and are widely collected.
The Mint struck these coin both in Mint State (Uncirculated) and Proof conditions. But while the Proof coins saw a meager mintage of 281,310 while the Uncirculated version had a much larger mintage of nearly 43 million coins struck – that is about 6.59% of the Uncirculated coin mintage.
The obverse of the American Silver Eagle bullion coin recreates the ‘Walking Liberty’ design that was first used on circulating half dollars between 1916 and 1947. This series was designed by Adolph Weinman, and they survived the decades very well. The design remained popular and that was the impetus to reuse it in 1986 and to continue to use it each year afterwards.
The design depicts a representation of Miss Liberty, garbed in flowing robes, and walking to the left. Her right hand and arm are outstretched while in her left arm she is cradling olive branches. The word “LIBERTY,” is on the top of the obverse, while on the bottom of the obverse is the date of striking. On the empty right fields, inscribed is “IN God WE TRUST.”
The reverse design displays a Heraldic Eagle, with wings outstretched, and a shield covering its body. Above the eagle are 13 artfully arranged five-pointed stars. She has a banner in her mouth on which is inscribed “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” On the upper periphery is “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and on the lower periphery is “1 OZ. FINE SILVER – ONE DOLLAR.”
This coin is a 2013-W American Silver Eagle in Proof condition. It has been graded as “Proof 69, Ultra Cameo,” by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). This company, NGC, is one of the most respected third-party, independent coin grading services around the world. The ’69 grade’ means it is one point away from perfection while the ‘Ultra Cameo,’ designation means that there is significant contrast on the reverse between the mirrored fields and the frosted devices.
