History
The American Gold Eagle program was introduced in 1986 following the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. Since its debut, the series has become one of the most recognized and widely collected gold coin programs worldwide. Proof versions are struck using specially polished dies and planchets to produce sharp detail and reflective surfaces designed specifically for collectors.
The 2026 release celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Known as the Semiquincentennial, this national milestone marks two and a half centuries of American history. To honor the occasion, the United States Mint incorporated distinctive design elements including dual anniversary dates and a Liberty Bell privy mark symbolizing the nation’s enduring spirit of freedom.
Design
The obverse features Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic depiction of Liberty striding forward while holding a torch and olive branch, symbolizing enlightenment and peace. The Capitol building appears in the distance while rays of sunlight extend behind Liberty. For this commemorative issue, the obverse includes the dual dates 1776–2026 to recognize the 250th anniversary of American independence. A Liberty Bell privy mark featuring the number “250” highlights the Semiquincentennial celebration and distinguishes this anniversary release within the American Gold Eagle series.
The reverse displays a detailed portrait of a bald eagle, symbolizing strength and national pride. Surrounding inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and IN GOD WE TRUST, along with the coin’s denomination and weight.
