With a maximum mintage of just 7,500 coins, it combines one troy ounce of gold with distinctive elements created specifically for America's semiquincentennial.
History
The American Gold Eagle program debuted in 1986 and has become one of the most recognizable modern U.S. gold coin series. Collector versions of the Gold Eagle have included proof and uncirculated finishes alongside the standard bullion issues.
For 2026, the U.S. Mint created a special Enhanced Uncirculated one-ounce Gold Eagle to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The coin features the dual date 1776 ~ 2026 along with a Liberty Bell privy mark containing the number 250. Struck at West Point and bearing the W mintmark, the issue was limited to a maximum mintage of 7,500 coins.
Design
The obverse features Augustus Saint-Gaudens' celebrated depiction of Liberty advancing forward with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. Rays of the rising sun appear behind her, with the U.S. Capitol visible in the background. For this special anniversary issue, the obverse carries the dual date 1776 ~ 2026 and a Liberty Bell privy mark inscribed with 250.
The reverse features Jennie Norris' detailed portrait of an American bald eagle, introduced to the Gold Eagle series in 2021. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 50 DOLLARS, and 1 OZ. FINE GOLD complete the design.
