Introduction

The 1889 $3 Gold Princess is one of the most distinctive and visually captivating coins ever produced by the United States Mint. Struck in limited quantities for collectors, this example certified by PCGS with Cameo designation showcases bold contrast and refined presentation rarely encountered in classic U.S. gold. The unusual denomination, combined with proof-era craftsmanship, makes this coin a standout in any advanced numismatic collection.

History

The $3 gold denomination was introduced in 1854, primarily to facilitate the purchase of postage stamps, though it never saw widespread commercial use. As a result, the denomination quickly became a specialty issue, with later-date examples struck almost exclusively for collectors.
By 1889, $3 gold coins were firmly established as low-mintage proof-only issues, produced in very small numbers and carefully preserved from circulation. Many were mishandled or melted over time, making surviving examples with strong eye appeal and Cameo contrast especially scarce and highly sought after today.

Design

Designed by James B. Longacre, the obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a Native American headdress, with the word Liberty inscribed on the band. The date appears below, framed by a clean, open field that highlights the coin’s proof finish and contrast.
The reverse depicts an agricultural wreath composed of corn, wheat, cotton, and tobacco, symbolizing America’s prosperity and regional diversity. The inscriptions United States of America and Three Dollars are enclosed within the wreath. In Cameo condition, this coin displays frosted design elements set against mirrored fields, creating dramatic visual depth and exceptional presentation that elevates it well beyond typical examples.
