Introduction
The 3 Gram Chinese Gold Panda Coin (Dates Vary) combines investment-grade gold with one of the world's most recognizable and collectible bullion coin designs. Struck from 3 grams of .999 fine gold, this fractional bullion coin offers an accessible way to own physical gold while enjoying the distinctive artistry of China's celebrated Panda series. With designs that change annually, each issue offers its own interpretation of China's beloved giant panda.
History
China introduced the Gold Panda series in 1982, establishing a bullion program that soon developed an international following for its high gold purity and distinctive artwork. Unlike many major bullion programs built around a largely unchanged annual design, the Gold Panda became known for introducing a new depiction of the giant panda on most yearly releases, giving individual dates their own visual identity.
In 2016, China made a significant change to the series by replacing traditional troy-ounce measurements with metric weights. The former 1/10 oz Gold Panda was replaced by the 3 gram coin, while other sizes throughout the series were converted to corresponding metric formats. The 3 gram issue carries a denomination of 50 Yuan and has remained part of the Gold Panda lineup ever since, continuing the series’ combination of precious metal content and changing annual artwork.
Design
The obverse features the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests within Beijing’s Temple of Heaven, an architectural landmark dating to the Ming dynasty. The Chinese inscription 中华人民共和国, meaning “People’s Republic of China,” appears above the temple, with the year of issue positioned below.
The reverse features China’s giant panda, with a new composition created for each 3 gram annual release. Depending on the date, designs may portray pandas climbing, resting, eating bamboo, or interacting with one another. The denomination, 3 gram weight, and .999 gold fineness accompany the imagery, giving each issue recognizable specifications while allowing the artwork itself to evolve from year to year.
