History
In 1987, the Royal Mint introduced their modern gold bullion coin, the Gold Britannia. After watching South Africa, Canada, China, and the United States.
The first issue of the Half Troy Ounce coin came out in 1987. Between 1987 and 2012, these coins were available in 22 carat gold (.9167 Fine Gold) but in 2013 through the present day, these coins are now comprised of 24 carat gold (.9999 Fine Gold). In that way, they truly do compete with other purely bullion coins.
Design
The obverse of the coins has always depicted the effigy of the current reigning monarch. Since this coin’s inception in 1987, the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II has graced these coins. Although Queen Elizabeth II passed in September of 2022, her effigy was still used on the 2023-dated Gold Britannia coins. Beginning in 2024, all Britannia gold coins bear the likeness of King Charles III.
The reverse of this coin was designed by artist Philip Nathan. His design depicts a front-facing bust of the allegorical figure of Britannia, full length, looking to her right. She is holding a trident in her right hand and a shield emblazoned with the British Union Jack is in her left hand, along with an olive branch. She is adorned in a Corinthian helmet and long flowing robes.
