100-Gram Gold CombiBar

History

Gold is a store of value and has been recognized as a valuable commodity for centuries. It is used in jewelry but also as an investment in the form of coins and bars.
Imagine that you want to buy a few ounces of gold, but in case of an emergency, you want to be able to sell off small parts of your holdings. You recognize that the premium on small 1/10^th ounce gold bars is more than you want to spend when buying a few ounces. That was the dilemma that many investors faced – buying multiple ounces of gold is economical but inconvenient for selling off small pieces.
A precious metals refining and manufacturing company named Valcambi of Balerna, Switzerland, came to the rescue. Valcambi looked at a marketplace crowded with standard sized gold bars and created the perfect solution. As gold prices rose, the demand for smaller sized bars as opposed to the larger (50 Troy Ounce and above) continued to increase.
Valcambi created the “Combi” bar, which is a 100-gram gold bar. At that weight, the 100 grams represented 3.215 Troy Ounces. But to make this bar convenient for investors, the bar can easily be broken into 100 exactly matching pieces with one’s hands, each small piece containing 1 Gram of .9999 Fine gold each.
The ability to create a bar that could be broken into equal pieces allowed the buyers to buy a bar that could store easily in a safe deposit box much more easily that 100 One Gram bars in tamper-evident packaging.
But even as one larger bar, it still gave the owner the flexibility to create small single gram bars for their use. These “Combi Bars” come in a plastic container that also holds an assay certificate and can be reclosed easily.
Design

The individual bars are each struck from .9999 Fine Gold. The front of each 1 Gram bar displays the Valcambi logo, the weight, and the purity of the gold in each bar. The reverse of all 100 bars together displays the unique serial number assigned to the combi bar as well as some product details.
