History
From 1986 through 2005, the US Mint sold a tremendous number of American Gold Eagle coins, not only in the 1 Troy Ounce size but also in the smaller fractional sizes. These 22-carat gold coins were important to investors and collectors alike. The Mint decided that to continue to spur sales to reach even greater heights, they needed to excite the marketplace by adding a new and different product.
They added an iconic and important design but with a new twist. The Mint revived the much-beloved designs of James Earle Fraser and reproduced them accurately. The Mint created a Gold version of both the obverse and reverse creating a new American Gold Buffalo bullion coin.
But unlike the American Gold Eagle bullion coins, the American Buffalo Gold bullion coins were struck in .9999 Fine Gold. This new bullion coin would compete with any other bullion coin worldwide.
Design
The obverse depicts, as expected, the superb rendition of the Native American warrior as designed by Fraser. The majestic Buffalo on a mound graces the reverse. While considerably larger than the original nickel, it was a tad smaller than the American Gold Eagle bullion coin, because it is comprised of pure gold, rather than alloyed with copper for durability.
The coins each contain exactly One Troy Ounce of pure gold. They also have a $50.00 denomination on them. Buyers love that the coins are solid investments in gold, and, because of their manufacturing process, they are also eligible to be held in Gold/Precious Metals IRA accounts.
