Introduction

The $20 Liberty Double Eagle Certified MS65 offers a Gem Mint State example of one of the most important gold denominations in American coinage. Designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, the Liberty Head Double Eagle was struck in 90% gold and contains 0.9675 troy oz of pure gold. Its MS65 grade reflects a high level of preservation, combining substantial precious metal content with the history and artistry of classic U.S. coinage.

History

The Liberty Head Double Eagle was introduced in 1850 following the California Gold Rush. The discovery of enormous quantities of gold created demand for a larger gold denomination, and the $20 Double Eagle provided an efficient way to convert that new supply into federal coinage.

Liberty Head Double Eagles were issued for circulation from 1850 through 1907 and were struck at several U.S. Mint facilities. These large gold coins played an important role in banking, major commercial transactions, and international trade during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The series underwent several design modifications during its long production history. Type I coins feature a reverse without the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Type II introduced the motto beginning in 1866, while Type III changed the abbreviated denomination TWENTY D. to TWENTY DOLLARS beginning in 1877. The exact date, mint, and design type of the coin received may vary.

Design

The obverse features James B. Longacre's left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. Thirteen stars representing the original states surround the portrait, with the coin's date positioned below.

The reverse centers on a heraldic eagle with a Union shield on its breast, accompanied by elaborate scrollwork and national inscriptions. Specific reverse details vary according to the date and design type represented.
