Took me over 30 minutes and multiple attempts to buy this coin. Venmo flat out doesn't work so don't offer it. Most sites these days offer Apple Pay or similar where 1 click buys and ships to my house. Not manually filling out many fields multiple times.
Introduction
The 1812 $5 Capped Bust Half Eagle graded PCGS MS63 CAC is a Choice Mint State example of early U.S. gold coinage. The Philadelphia Mint struck this coin during the final year of the Capped Bust design. It contains approximately .2579 troy oz of pure gold. CAC approval recognizes its quality and eye appeal within the assigned MS63 grade.
History
The Capped Bust Half Eagle was introduced in 1807. U.S. Mint engraver John Reich created the new design, giving the $5 gold coin a distinctly different appearance from earlier Half Eagles.
In 1812, the Philadelphia Mint struck 58,087 Capped Bust Half Eagles. This was the final year of the design introduced in 1807. A new Half Eagle design followed in 1813.
Two die varieties are known for the 1812 issue. They are distinguished primarily by the spacing of the denomination on the reverse.
Design
The obverse features Liberty facing left and wearing a cap inscribed with LIBERTY. Thirteen stars surround the portrait, while the date 1812 appears below.
The reverse features an eagle with a shield across its breast. The eagle holds arrows and an olive branch. Above it, a banner bears the inscription E PLURIBUS UNUM. The inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the design, while 5 D. identifies the denomination.
