The American Silver Eagle bullion coin program was implemented in 1986 in order to compete with other worldwide bullion coin programs. The program was very successful because collectors and investors were ecstatic about the idea of an American bullion coin as well as they also loved the design. The coins sold very well and the demand from dealers, collectors, and investors continued to grow.

The obverse design was a faithful reproduction of Adolph Weinman’s ‘Walking Liberty’ half dollar that was struck between 1916 and 1947. Weinman’s depiction of Miss Liberty has become a classic coinage design. The reverse of the American Silver Eagle displayed a new rendition, by then-Chief Engraver of the US Mint, John Mercanti, of a Heraldic Eagle, which was first used between on an early Silver Dollar design from 1798 to 1804.

Mercanti’s design was an eagle with upswept wings, a shield covering its body, with arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. There are 13 stars arranged above the eagle, and a banner is in the eagle’s beak. The banner had “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” inscribed on it and on the upper periphery is “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” while “1 OZ. FINE SILVER – ONE DOLLAR,” on the upper and lower peripheries, respectively.

This coin has been graded and encapsulated as ‘MS69,’ by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). NGC is one of the major coin grading companies that authenticates, grades, and encapsulates coins. The grade of this coin is MS69, which means that this coin is one point away from perfection.
