Introduction

The 1992-S 1 oz American Silver Eagle certified by NGC combines one troy ounce of .999 fine silver with the distinctive finish of a U.S. Mint proof coin. Struck at the San Francisco Mint and bearing the S mintmark, this issue was produced specifically for collectors and represents the final year of the original run of annual San Francisco proof Silver Eagles.

History

The American Silver Eagle program debuted in 1986 following authorization under the Liberty Coin Act of 1985. Alongside the bullion version, the U.S. Mint produced proof Silver Eagles for collectors featuring specially prepared dies and polished planchets that create sharply defined details and reflective fields.

In 1992, the San Francisco Mint produced 498,654 proof Silver Eagles. The 1992-S marked the seventh annual proof issue of the series and the final year before annual proof production moved to the Philadelphia Mint in 1993. The coin belongs to the original Type 1 generation of the Silver Eagle, pairing Adolph A. Weinman's Walking Liberty obverse with John Mercanti's heraldic eagle reverse.

Design

The obverse features Adolph A. Weinman's Walking Liberty design, originally created for the Walking Liberty Half Dollar. Liberty strides toward the rising sun while draped in the American flag and carrying branches of laurel and oak. The inscriptions LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date 1992 complete the obverse.

The reverse features John Mercanti's heraldic eagle behind a shield, holding an olive branch and arrows. Thirteen stars above the eagle represent the original colonies. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, 1 OZ. FINE SILVER, ONE DOLLAR, and E PLURIBUS UNUM complete the design. The S mintmark identifies the coin as a San Francisco Mint proof.
