Introduction

The 1907 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle graded NGC MS64 CAC represents the final year of one of America’s longest-running gold coin series. Certified Choice Mint State by Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) and approved by Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC), this coin survives in an impressive state of preservation more than a century after it was struck. Containing approximately .9675 troy ounces of pure gold, the 1907 Double Eagle combines substantial precious metal content with the significance of a final-year issue from the classic era of pre-1933 American gold.

History

The Liberty Head Double Eagle was introduced in 1850 following the California Gold Rush, which dramatically increased the nation’s gold supply. Designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, the new $20 denomination provided an efficient way to convert large quantities of gold into coinage and became important in banking, international commerce, and large financial transactions throughout the nineteenth century.

The year 1907 marked the end of the Liberty Head Double Eagle after nearly six decades of production. The Philadelphia Mint struck 1,451,786 Liberty Double Eagles that year as the United States prepared to transition to Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ dramatically different $20 gold design. Both Liberty Head and Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles were produced during this pivotal year, making 1907 a tangible dividing line between two distinct eras of American gold coinage. In NGC MS64 CAC, this example preserves Longacre’s final-year design at the Choice Mint State level.

Design

The obverse features Liberty facing left, wearing a coronet inscribed with LIBERTY. Thirteen stars representing the original states surround her portrait, with the date positioned below. Longacre’s classical depiction of Liberty remained the face of the $20 denomination from its introduction in 1850 through the series’ conclusion in 1907.

The reverse features a heraldic eagle with a Union shield across its breast, holding an olive branch and arrows in its talons. Above the eagle, rays surround an oval of stars containing the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS complete the Type III design introduced in 1877. As the final Philadelphia issue of the Liberty Head Double Eagle, the 1907 represents the closing chapter of a design that had defined America’s largest circulating gold denomination for nearly six decades.
