Introduction
The 2027 1/2 oz Lunar Goat Silver Coin celebrates the Year of the Goat as part of The Perth Mint's Australian Lunar Series III. Struck from one-half troy ounce of .9999 fine silver, this fractional bullion coin combines high-purity silver with an annually changing design inspired by the Chinese lunar calendar. Issued as Australian legal tender, the coin carries a face value of $0.50 AUD.
History
The Perth Mint's Australian Lunar Series III continues a tradition of precious metal coins honoring the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac. The third series began in 2020 with the Year of the Mouse and features a new animal each year across a range of gold, silver, and platinum bullion coins.
The 2027 release celebrates the Year of the Goat, the eighth animal in the traditional Chinese zodiac. Previous Years of the Goat include 2015, 2003, 1991, and 1979. In Chinese tradition, the Goat is associated with qualities including creativity, compassion, calmness, and resilience.
The 1/2 oz silver edition offers a compact fractional format within the 2027 Lunar Goat bullion range. Containing one-half troy ounce of .9999 fine silver, it combines accessible silver content with the distinctive annual artwork of Australian Lunar Series III.
Design
The reverse, designed by Natasha Muhl, depicts a mature goat, a young goat, and a baby goat grazing peacefully together. The scene embodies the auspicious phrase "Three Goats Bring Bliss," symbolizing the end of winter, the arrival of spring, renewal, and prosperous new beginnings. A plum blossom tree represents purity, resilience, and hope. The design also incorporates the Chinese character for goat, the inscription GOAT 2027, and The Perth Mint's P mintmark.
The obverse features Dan Thorne's effigy of His Majesty King Charles III. The portrait is accompanied by inscriptions identifying the monarch, the coin's one-half troy ounce weight, .9999 silver fineness, and $0.50 Australian monetary denomination.
