Introduction
The 1906 $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle graded PCGS PR63 CAC is a scarce proof gold issue from the closing years of the Liberty Head series. The Philadelphia Mint struck only 85 proofs in 1906. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, this coin represents one of the final proof issues of the long-running Liberty Head Half Eagle. CAC approval recognizes its quality and eye appeal within the assigned PR63 grade.
History
The Liberty Head Half Eagle was introduced in 1839. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, it became one of the longest-running designs in U.S. gold coinage. The design appeared on $5 gold coins struck at several U.S. Mint facilities during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Proof Half Eagles were produced specifically for collectors and struck in much smaller quantities than regular-issue coins. In 1906, the Philadelphia Mint struck just 85 Proof Liberty Head Half Eagles. It was the second-to-last year of Proof production for the series.
Numismatic researchers have identified only one die pairing for the 1906 Proof Half Eagle. Known as JD-1, it was used to produce the entire proof issue for the year.
Design
The obverse features Liberty facing left and wearing a coronet inscribed with LIBERTY. Thirteen stars surround the portrait, representing the original states. The date 1906 appears below.
The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle with a shield across its breast. The eagle holds arrows and an olive branch. The inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and FIVE D. As a Philadelphia Mint issue, the coin carries no mintmark.
