Introduction

The 1 oz Gold American Eagle stands as the flagship gold bullion coin of the United States Mint and one of the most recognizable gold coins in the world. Struck in 22-karat gold (.9167 fine), it combines intrinsic value with enduring beauty and reliability. Backed by the U.S. government for weight and purity, each Gold Eagle contains exactly one troy ounce of pure gold and is prized by both investors and collectors for its craftsmanship, liquidity, and patriotic design.

History

Introduced in 1986 under the Gold Bullion Coin Act, the American Eagle series was created to give investors a secure and accessible way to own gold sourced exclusively from the United States. The coin’s design pays homage to America’s artistic heritage, reviving Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic image of Liberty first used on the $20 Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933. Since its debut, the Gold American Eagle has become a global standard for bullion excellence—valued not only for its metal content but for its enduring symbolism of freedom and strength. In 2021, the U.S. Mint introduced a refreshed reverse design, marking a new era for this celebrated series.

Design

The obverse of the 1 oz Gold American Eagle showcases Lady Liberty in full stride, holding a torch and olive branch, her hair flowing in the wind against a backdrop of sun rays and the U.S. Capitol. The reverse, designed by Jennie Norris (Type 2, post-2021), features a powerful close-up portrait of a bald eagle—symbolizing vigilance and majesty. Earlier issues (Type 1) depicted a family of eagles in flight and at rest. Each coin is struck with meticulous detail, featuring reeded edges and advanced anti-counterfeiting elements. With a diameter of 32.7 mm and total weight of 33.93 grams, the Gold American Eagle represents the perfect fusion of art, heritage, and tangible wealth.
