History
The Gold Britannia coin has a stunning design. The allegorical figure of Britannia has symbolized the British people since the days of ancient Rome. This coin is a .9999 Fine Gold One Troy Ounce coin. The Gold Britannia coins were first struck in 1987. Accordingly, only two monarchs have ever appeared on the obverse of these coins – Queen Elizabeth II (from 1987 issues to 2023) and King Charles III (2024 to Present).
Design
The portraits of Queen Elizabeth II all face to the right so the 2024 and later portraits of King Charles III will all face to the left. Many Gold Britannias incorporate security features to make counterfeiting much more difficult.
The obverse depicts the reigning monarch at the time the coin was struck. The reverse displays the allegorical figure of Britannia. She stands tall against a raging gale. Her likeness symbolizes the courage and strength of Great Britian and the British people.
There are also silver Britannia coins as well as Platinum Britannia coins. These coins were struck in both Brilliant Uncirculated and limited mintage Proof coins.
