History
The Draped Bust Half Dollar was introduced in 1796 and served as one of the largest circulating silver denominations in the early United States. Designed by Robert Scot, the series played an essential role in commerce during the nation's infancy, when silver coinage was in limited supply and often remained in circulation for decades.
The 1806 issue is well known for several distinct die varieties, including the Pointed 6 and Knob 6 obverse styles, as well as reverse dies with and without stems beneath the eagle's talons. The Pointed 6 No Stem variety is one of the most popular among specialists in early federal coinage. Certified PCGS AU53 and endorsed by CAC, this example retains much of its original detail, making it a highly desirable representative of this historic series.
Design
The obverse features Robert Scot's Draped Bust portrait of Liberty facing right with flowing hair tied by a ribbon. Liberty is surrounded by stars representing the states in the Union, while the date appears below. On the Pointed 6 variety, the upper loop of the numeral six ends in a distinct pointed tip, providing an important diagnostic feature for collectors.
The reverse displays the Heraldic Eagle adapted from the Great Seal of the United States. The eagle carries a shield on its breast while holding an olive branch and arrows, symbolizing peace and military readiness. The No Stem variety is identified by the absence of stems extending below the olive branch and arrows beneath the eagle's talons. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA complete this classic early American design.
