Introduction

The 1807 $5 Capped Bust Left Gold Half Eagle graded PCGS MS63 CAC is a Choice Mint State example from an important transitional year in early United States gold coinage. Certified MS63 by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and approved by Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC), this Philadelphia Mint issue represents the first year of John Reich's Capped Bust Left design. Struck more than two centuries ago, the 1807 Half Eagle combines early American history, Mint State preservation, and the appeal of a short-lived gold coin type.

History

The $5 Half Eagle was one of the original gold denominations authorized by the Coinage Act of 1792 and became an important part of the young nation's monetary system. In 1807, the United States Mint introduced a major redesign created by Assistant Engraver John Reich. His new Capped Bust Left design replaced Robert Scot's earlier right-facing Liberty and established a new appearance for the denomination that would continue, with later modifications, through 1834.

The Philadelphia Mint struck 51,605 examples of the new Capped Bust Left Half Eagle in 1807. Reich's redesign introduced a larger left-facing portrait of Liberty and substantially reworked the reverse, including a more naturalistic depiction of the eagle and the clearly displayed denomination 5 D. This version of Reich's design remained in production through 1812 before the Half Eagle was redesigned again in 1813. Graded PCGS MS63 with CAC approval, this example offers Choice Mint State preservation from the first year of this important early gold type.

Design

The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a cap with a band inscribed with LIBERTY. Thirteen stars representing the original states surround the portrait, while the date 1807 appears below. Reich's larger portrait and left-facing orientation distinguished the new design from the earlier Half Eagles produced during the first years of the United States Mint.

The reverse depicts an eagle with outstretched wings and a shield across its breast, holding an olive branch and arrows in its talons. A ribbon bearing the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM appears above the eagle, while UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the design. The denomination 5 D. appears below. The absence of a mintmark identifies the coin as a product of the Philadelphia Mint, which was the only United States Mint facility producing federal coinage at the time.

A LITTLE STICKER MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE.

Within each number of the coin grading scale is a small range of condition from low-end to high-end. Certified coins of the same grade can be of varying quality. Many of today’s collectors want coins that are solid or premium quality for their assigned grade. CAC holds coins to a higher standard so you can be confident in the value of yours. We verify previously graded coins … and award our sticker only to those coins that meet the standard for today’s selective buyer.

WHAT THE CAC STICKER MEANS:

  • Verified. Your coin has been verified as meeting the standard for strict quality within its grade.
  • Guaranteed. CAC stands behind our verification.

THE CAC STICKER IS BACKED BY EXPERIENCE.

CAC was founded by leading members of the numismatic community, including John Albanese, a respected authority on coin grading and the rare coin market.
