History

The Classic Head Half Eagle was introduced in 1834 following the passage of the Coinage Act of 1834, legislation that reduced the weight and gold content of United States gold coins. The change was designed to keep American gold coins in domestic circulation after years of being melted or exported because their intrinsic value exceeded their face value. Designed by Chief Engraver William Kneass, the Classic Head series remained in production through 1838 before being replaced by Christian Gobrecht's Liberty Head design.

The 1834 issue marks the inaugural year of the Classic Head Half Eagle series and includes several collectible die varieties. The Crosslet 4 variety is identified by the distinctive horizontal crossbar at the top of the numeral four in the date, making it one of the most recognizable varieties in the series.
