Introduction

The 1857-S $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle is a historic San Francisco Mint gold coin recovered from the legendary S.S. Central America shipwreck. Designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, this Type I Double Eagle represents an extraordinary connection to the California Gold Rush and one of the most significant treasure recoveries in American history. This example is graded PCGS MS63, representing a Choice Uncirculated coin with no wear from circulation and remarkable preservation for a 19th-century shipwreck recovery.

History

The San Francisco Mint struck 970,500 Liberty Head Double Eagles in 1857, converting gold from California's mining regions into federal coinage. The $20 denomination played an important role in moving large quantities of gold through American commerce and banking during the Gold Rush era.

On September 12, 1857, the S.S. Central America sank during a hurricane off the Carolina coast while transporting passengers and a substantial shipment of California gold. The loss of the steamship and its valuable cargo contributed to the financial turmoil surrounding the Panic of 1857. Often remembered as the Ship of Gold, the wreck became one of the most famous maritime disasters of the 19th century.

Discovered in 1988, the wreck yielded thousands of historic gold coins, including 1857-S Liberty Head Double Eagles. Many recovered coins had escaped ordinary circulation and were preserved in remarkable condition beneath the ocean for more than a century. Today, S.S. Central America Double Eagles are valued by collectors for their combination of historic provenance, Gold Rush significance, and surviving condition.

Design

The obverse features James B. Longacre's left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. Her hair is arranged in a bun with curls descending behind her neck, while thirteen stars representing the original states surround the portrait. The date 1857 appears below.

The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings and a shield on its breast, surrounded by an oval of stars and rays. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA appears around the design, with the denomination TWENTY D. below. As a Type I Liberty Head Double Eagle, the 1857-S predates the addition of IN GOD WE TRUST to the reverse in 1866. The S mintmark identifies the coin as a product of the San Francisco Mint.
