Introduction
The 1867 $1 Gold Liberty Head represents a beautifully preserved example of post-Civil War American gold coinage. Graded PCGS MS65, this coin exhibits strong luster, sharp detail, and exceptional eye appeal. As one of the smallest denominations ever struck in U.S. gold, the Gold Dollar remains a fascinating piece of American numismatic history and an enduring favorite among collectors.
History
The Gold Dollar series was introduced in 1849 following the California Gold Rush, which dramatically increased the nation’s gold supply. By 1867, the United States was emerging from the Civil War and rebuilding its economy during the Reconstruction era. Gold coinage remained an important part of commerce and banking, though many examples experienced heavy circulation or were later melted. High-grade survivors from this period are increasingly scarce, making mint-state-quality examples especially desirable today.
Design
The obverse features Liberty depicted as an Indian Princess wearing a feathered headdress inscribed with LIBERTY. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the portrait. Designed by James B. Longacre, the Type 3 Gold Dollar design improved upon earlier versions by enlarging and refining Liberty’s portrait for greater detail and durability.
The reverse displays the denomination 1 DOLLAR and the date within an agricultural wreath composed of cotton, wheat, corn, and tobacco tied together with a bow at the base. The wreath symbolizes the agricultural strength and economic prosperity of the United States during the 19th century.
