Introduction

The 1874 $1 Gold Type 3 represents the final evolution of the Indian Princess Gold Dollar design. Graded NGC MS67 with CAC approval, this elite example exhibits exceptional mint luster, sharply defined detail, and outstanding surface preservation. As one of the smallest denominations ever struck in United States gold coinage, the Type 3 Gold Dollar combines diminutive size with significant historical and numismatic importance.

History

The Gold Dollar was introduced in 1849 following the California Gold Rush, when increased bullion reserves allowed the United States Mint to expand gold coin production. Early designs were challenging to strike due to their small diameter, prompting refinements that culminated in the Type 3 redesign of 1856. The modified portrait increased relief and improved striking quality. By 1874, gold dollars were widely used in commerce, though many examples were later melted or heavily circulated, making superbly preserved survivors increasingly scarce.

Design

The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty depicted as an Indian Princess, wearing a crown. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the central portrait. The enlarged Type 3 portrait improved detail and overall balance compared to earlier versions.
The reverse displays the denomination 1 DOLLAR centered within a large agricultural wreath tied with a bow at the base. The wreath incorporates cotton, wheat, corn, and tobacco, symbolizing the agricultural strength of the nation. The compact yet intricate design demonstrates the Mint’s effort to maximize visual impact within the coin’s small format.

A LITTLE STICKER MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE.

Within each number of the coin grading scale is a small range of condition from low-end to high-end. Certified coins of the same grade can be of varying quality. Many of today’s collectors want coins that are solid or premium quality for their assigned grade. CAC holds coins to a higher standard so you can be confident in the value of yours. We verify previously graded coins … and award our sticker only to those coins that meet the standard for today’s selective buyer.

WHAT THE CAC STICKER MEANS:

  • Verified. Your coin has been verified as meeting the standard for strict quality within its grade.
  • Guaranteed. CAC stands behind our verification.

THE CAC STICKER IS BACKED BY EXPERIENCE.

CAC was founded by leading members of the numismatic community, including John Albanese, a respected authority on coin grading and the rare coin market.
