Introduction

The 1876-S $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle graded NGC MS61 is a Mint State example of the classic Liberty Head Double Eagle struck during the 100th anniversary year of American independence. Produced at the San Francisco Mint in 90% gold, the coin contains nearly one troy ounce of pure gold. Its MS61 grade preserves the coin in uncirculated condition, offering an example that combines classic U.S. gold coinage with the historical significance of America's centennial year.

History

Designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, the Liberty Head Double Eagle was introduced in 1850 following the California Gold Rush. The $20 denomination provided an efficient way to convert the nation's growing gold supply into federal coinage and became important for banking, large commercial transactions, and international trade.

The San Francisco Mint struck 1,597,000 Liberty Head Double Eagles in 1876. The date coincided with the centennial of American independence, a milestone celebrated across the country and highlighted by the Centennial International Exhibition held in Philadelphia.

The 1876-S also marks the final year of the Type II Liberty Head Double Eagle design introduced in 1866. Type II coins feature the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on the reverse and the abbreviated denomination TWENTY D. Beginning in 1877, the denomination was changed to TWENTY DOLLARS, creating the Type III design that continued through the end of the Liberty Head Double Eagle series in 1907.

Design

The obverse features James B. Longacre's left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. Thirteen stars representing the original states surround the portrait, with the date 1876 positioned below.

The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle with a Union shield on its breast, holding arrows and an olive branch. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST appears above the eagle within an arrangement of stars and rays. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY D. identify the issuing nation and denomination, while the S mintmark identifies the San Francisco Mint.
