Introduction
The 1876-S $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle graded PCGS AU50 CAC is an attractive example of a classic 19th-century American gold coin. Struck at the San Francisco Mint in .900 fine gold, this Double Eagle contains nearly one troy ounce of pure gold and represents the final year of the Type II Liberty Head design. Its AU50 grade from Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), together with CAC approval, recognizes a well-preserved circulated example with quality and eye appeal that meet CAC's standards for the assigned grade.
History
The Liberty Head Double Eagle was introduced in 1850 following the California Gold Rush, when an influx of newly mined gold helped create the need for a larger denomination U.S. gold coin. The $20 Double Eagle became an important vehicle for converting western gold into federal coinage and remained in production until 1907.
The 1876-S Double Eagle belongs to the Type II design introduced in 1866, when the motto IN GOD WE TRUST was added to the reverse. The San Francisco Mint struck 1,597,000 1876-S Double Eagles, reflecting the important role the facility played in processing gold from the American West. The year also marked the final appearance of the Type II design. Beginning in 1877, the design was modified and the denomination was changed from TWENTY D. to TWENTY DOLLARS, creating the Type III Liberty Head Double Eagle.
Design
The obverse features Liberty facing left and wearing a coronet inscribed with LIBERTY. Thirteen stars representing the original states surround the portrait, while the date 1876 appears below.
The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle with a shield across its breast, holding an olive branch and arrows. A ring of thirteen stars and rays appears above the eagle beneath the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY D. identify the issuing nation and denomination, while the S mintmark appears below the eagle.
