Introduction

The 1885-O Morgan Silver Dollar graded NGC MS63 is a Choice Mint State example from the historic New Orleans Mint. Certified MS63 by Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), this coin retains full Mint State status while representing one of the most widely collected silver dollar series in American numismatics. With its 90% silver composition, distinctive New Orleans mintmark, and classic George T. History

The Morgan Silver Dollar was introduced in 1878 following passage of the Bland-Allison Act, which required the U.S. Treasury to purchase substantial quantities of silver and convert it into silver dollars. Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan created a new design for the denomination, beginning a series that would become one of the most recognizable and widely collected in American numismatics.

The New Orleans Mint struck 9,185,000 Morgan Dollars in 1885. Many of these coins did not immediately enter circulation and instead remained in government storage for decades. Large quantities were eventually released from Treasury and Philadelphia Mint holdings, including millions of 1885-O dollars that entered the market during the major Treasury releases of the early 1960s. As a result, the 1885-O is among the most available New Orleans Morgan Dollars in Mint State, giving collectors an accessible way to own a well-preserved example from this historic Southern branch mint.

Design

The obverse features George T. Morgan's left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton, reflecting the nation's agricultural heritage. A ribbon in Liberty's hair is inscribed with LIBERTY. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM appears above, thirteen stars represent the original states, and the date 1885 appears below.

The reverse depicts a bald eagle with outstretched wings, holding an olive branch and arrows in its talons. A wreath surrounds the eagle, while the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR complete the design. The O mintmark positioned beneath the wreath identifies this example as a product of the New Orleans Mint.
