Introduction
The 1887-O Morgan Silver Dollar graded NGC MS63 is a Choice Mint State example from the historic New Orleans Mint. Certified MS63 by Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), this coin retains full Mint State status while representing one of the most widely collected silver dollar series in American numismatics. With its 90% silver composition, distinctive New Orleans mintmark, and classic George T. Morgan design, the 1887-O offers collectors an appealing combination of precious metal content, branch-mint history, and nineteenth-century American coinage.
History
The Morgan Silver Dollar was introduced in 1878 following passage of the Bland-Allison Act, which required the U.S. Treasury to purchase substantial quantities of silver and convert it into silver dollars. Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan created a new design for the denomination, beginning a series that would become one of the most recognizable and widely collected in American numismatics.
The New Orleans Mint struck 11,550,000 Morgan Dollars in 1887. Despite this substantial original mintage, the issue is known for frequently displaying weaker strikes and contact marks acquired during production and storage. Large quantities remained in Treasury holdings for decades, and tens of thousands of Mint State 1887-O dollars entered the collector market during Treasury releases from 1962 through 1964. Graded NGC MS63, this example represents a Choice Mint State survivor from an important Southern branch mint.
Design
The obverse features George T. Morgan's left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton, reflecting the nation's agricultural heritage. A ribbon in Liberty's hair is inscribed with LIBERTY. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM appears above, thirteen stars represent the original states, and the date 1887 appears below.
The reverse depicts a bald eagle with outstretched wings, holding an olive branch and arrows in its talons. A wreath surrounds the eagle, while the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR complete the design. The O mintmark positioned beneath the wreath identifies this example as a product of the New Orleans Mint.
