Introduction

The 1889-CC $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle is a highly desirable Carson City gold issue, combining substantial gold content with the allure of one of America’s most storied mints. Graded PCGS AU55, this example retains strong detail and original character, offering collectors a well-preserved coin from the final decades of Carson City coinage. Pieces from this mint are especially sought after for their connection to the American frontier and limited overall production.

History

The Carson City Mint began operating in 1870 to process silver and gold from Nevada’s Comstock Lode and surrounding mining regions. Double Eagles struck at Carson City played a vital role in large financial transactions, banking, and international trade. By 1889, production at the mint was relatively limited compared to larger facilities, contributing to the scarcity of surviving examples. Many Carson City gold coins were later melted or heavily circulated, making About Uncirculated specimens increasingly difficult to locate. Today, the 1889-CC Double Eagle stands as a tangible artifact of the American West and its rich mining heritage.

Design

The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with LIBERTY. Thirteen stars encircle the portrait, representing the original states, while the date appears below. The design reflects the neoclassical style favored in 19th century American coinage and was created by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre.
The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with a shield across its chest, holding an olive branch and arrows that symbolize peace and strength. Above the eagle appears a semicircle of thirteen stars, while UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the design and the denomination TWENTY DOLLARS appears below. The distinctive CC mintmark beneath the eagle identifies its origin at the Carson City Mint, enhancing its appeal among collectors.
