A little more complicated to order than most.

This design showcases a Native American Indian facing left, donned in a feathered headdress. The date is positioned at the bottom, while LIBERTY graces the top. Along the left edge, six stars embellish the coin, while seven stars adorn the right. On the reverse side, an eagle at rest is depicted, standing atop a bundle of arrows with an olive branch elegantly wrapping around them. To the left of the eagle, the inscription E PLURIBUS UNUM is featured, and to its right lies the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. At the bottom, the denomination is clearly displayed. Completing the composition, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA curves along the top half of the coin's edge.

President Roosevelt was committed to ensuring that American coins would rank among the world's finest. To achieve this vision, he engaged one of the nation's premier sculptors, resulting in the creation of the exquisite Saint-Gaudens Eagle and Double Eagle. Subsequently, Roosevelt turned his attention to redesigning the quarter eagle and half eagle, demanding nothing short of excellence. He recognized that the Mint's Chief Engraver, Charles Barber, lacked the creative capacity to produce exceptional designs and could potentially hinder outside engravers brought in for the task. Therefore, working discreetly through a personal acquaintance, Roosevelt enlisted sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt to craft models for the new quarter eagle and half eagle.

Roosevelt was highly pleased with the outcomes and promptly ordered coin production. However, Charles Barber, driven by jealousy, delayed production for months, contending that modifications were needed before striking could commence. His alterations ultimately detracted from the artistic qualities of the coin. Yet, even with these changes, Barber couldn't entirely diminish the inherent beauty of Pratt's creation. Although not universally embraced during its era, the Indian Head Quarter Eagle is now regarded as one of America's most aesthetically pleasing coins ever minted.

The distinguishing feature of incused coins, where design elements are recessed below the surface, led to various complaints. Some critics even posited that these recessed areas might accumulate dirt and germs, potentially serving as carriers of disease. Such beliefs were unfounded and disregarded. Others contended that neither the Indian nor the eagle was portrayed accurately, a valid objection that could be attributed to Barber's alterations to the original designs.

Indian Head Quarter Eagles, being the final quarter eagles to be produced, are collected both by Type and by their respective date and mintmarks. Notably, there are no major rarities that would strain a collector's budget when building a date set. Only the 1911-D can be considered genuinely rare. Thus, assembling a complete date and mintmark set is reasonably affordable, especially if the collector opts for a lower, circulated grade for the 1911-D.
