Introduction
The 1910 $2.50 Indian Head Gold Quarter Eagle from the Simpson Collection represents an elite proof issue within the Indian Head gold series. Graded PCGS PR66 and approved by CAC, this coin exhibits exceptional eye appeal with deeply mirrored fields and finely detailed frosted devices. Its provenance from the renowned Simpson Collection further enhances its desirability, placing it among the most distinguished examples available to advanced collectors.
History
The Indian Head Quarter Eagle was introduced in 1908 as part of President Theodore Roosevelt’s initiative to elevate the artistic quality of American coinage. Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, the series broke from tradition by employing an incuse design, where the features are recessed into the surface. Proof examples from this era were struck in very limited quantities for collectors, using specially prepared dies and planchets. Coins with notable provenance, such as those from the Simpson Collection, are especially prized for their pedigree and documented history within the numismatic community.
Design
The obverse features a left-facing portrait of a Native American wearing a feathered headdress, with LIBERTY inscribed above and the date below. The incuse design creates a distinctive appearance, with the devices recessed beneath the surface, giving the coin a bold and sculptural quality.
The reverse displays an eagle standing on a bundle of arrows intertwined with an olive branch, symbolizing strength and peace. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination 2 1/2 DOLLARS. The incuse design is continued on the reverse, maintaining consistency and enhancing the coin’s unique visual appeal. The proof finish further accentuates the intricate detail and contrast across the design.
