1911-D $5 Indian PCGS AU53 CAC

Introduction
The 1911-D $5 Indian Head Gold Half Eagle is one of the most sought-after key dates in the entire Indian Head gold series. Graded PCGS AU53 and approved by CAC, this example offers strong detail, original surfaces, and desirable collector quality. Coins from the Denver Mint are especially scarce for this issue, making it a cornerstone piece for collectors assembling a complete set of Indian Head Half Eagles.
History
Introduced in 1908 as part of President Theodore Roosevelt’s initiative to modernize American coinage, the Indian Head Half Eagle represented a bold departure from traditional designs. The 1911-D issue, struck at the Denver Mint, is widely recognized as the key date of the series due to its relatively low mintage and limited survival rate. Many examples saw circulation, and higher-grade pieces are notably difficult to obtain. As a result, the 1911-D has become a focal point for collectors of early 20th century U.S. gold coinage.
Design
The obverse features a left-facing portrait of a Native American wearing a detailed feathered headdress, with LIBERTY inscribed above and the date positioned below. Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, the coin employs an incuse design, where the devices are recessed into the surface rather than raised, creating a distinctive and innovative appearance.
The reverse displays a standing eagle perched on a bundle of arrows entwined with an olive branch, symbolizing strength and peace. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination FIVE DOLLARS. The incuse design is carried through on the reverse, giving the coin a cohesive and uniquely modern look within the context of early 20th century American coinage.
