Introduction

The 1914-D $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle graded NGC MS63 is a Choice Mint State example of one of the most distinctive designs in American coinage. Certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), this Denver Mint issue combines high-grade preservation with the historic appeal of classic pre-1933 United States gold. Containing approximately .2419 troy ounces of pure gold, the coin brings together substantial precious metal content, branch-mint history, and Bela Lyon Pratt’s innovative incuse artistry.

History

The Indian Head Half Eagle debuted in 1908 during President Theodore Roosevelt’s campaign to elevate the artistic quality of American coinage. Designed by sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt, the series departed dramatically from tradition by placing its principal design elements below the coin’s surface rather than raising them in relief. The same innovative technique appeared on Pratt’s $2.50 Indian Quarter Eagle, giving the two denominations an unmistakable place in American numismatic history.

The Denver Mint struck 247,000 Indian Half Eagles in 1914, a relatively modest mintage within the series. Although the 1914-D remains obtainable through the Choice Mint State grades, examples become considerably more challenging at the Gem level. Certified NGC MS63, this coin represents a well-preserved Choice Mint State survivor from a period when gold coinage still played an active role in American commerce.

Design

The obverse features a Native American wearing a feathered headdress facing left, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original states. The inscription LIBERTY appears above the portrait, with the date positioned below. Pratt’s incuse technique places the portrait, lettering, stars, and other major design elements below the surrounding field, creating an appearance unlike traditional raised-relief American coinage.

The reverse depicts an eagle standing upon a bundle of arrows wrapped with an olive branch, symbols of military preparedness and peace. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, and FIVE DOLLARS complete the design. The D mintmark identifies this 1914 issue as a product of the Denver Mint.
