Introduction

The 1917 Standing Liberty Quarter Type 1 Full Head represents one of the most visually striking and short-lived designs in American coinage. Graded PCGS MS66 with the Full Head designation, this example displays exceptional strike sharpness and outstanding preservation. As an early issue of the Standing Liberty series, the Type 1 design captures a bold artistic shift in U.S. Mint history and remains a key collectible among advanced numismatists.

History

Introduced in late 1916 and continuing briefly into early 1917, the Type 1 Standing Liberty Quarter marked a dramatic departure from earlier quarter designs. Created during a period of global tension as World War I unfolded, the design reflects a nation balancing peace and preparedness. Public controversy over Liberty’s exposed breast led to a mid-year modification in 1917, making the original Type 1 version a short-lived and historically significant issue. High-grade survivors with full strike detail are increasingly scarce.

Design

The obverse features Liberty standing between two gateposts, holding an olive branch in one hand and a shield in the other, symbolizing peace and readiness. The Type 1 design includes Liberty with an exposed breast, a detail removed later in 1917. The Full Head designation indicates strong detail in Liberty’s hair and helmet, an essential strike characteristic for collectors.
The reverse depicts a powerful eagle in flight surrounded by stars, reinforcing themes of strength and national resolve. The dynamic composition and classical influence make the Standing Liberty Quarter one of the most admired American coin designs of the twentieth century.
