Introduction
The 1836 $2.50 Classic Head Gold Quarter Eagle Script 8 graded NGC MS61 is a Mint State example of early United States gold coinage. Designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver William Kneass, the Classic Head Quarter Eagle was produced for only a brief period from 1834 through 1839. This 1836 example features the distinctive Script 8 date variety and has been certified MS61 by Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), indicating an uncirculated coin with no wear from circulation.
History
The Classic Head Quarter Eagle was introduced in 1834 following legislation that reduced the weight and gold content of U.S. gold coins. Earlier gold coins contained enough precious metal that rising gold prices encouraged their removal from circulation for melting or export. The revised specifications helped bring U.S. gold coinage back into circulation while introducing a new design by William Kneass.
In 1836, the Philadelphia Mint struck 547,986 Classic Head Quarter Eagles, one of the larger annual outputs of the early $2.50 gold denomination. Multiple varieties are known for the year, including examples distinguished by Script 8 and Block 8 styles in the date. These differences in the shape of the numeral 8 create recognizable varieties for specialists in early United States gold. Certified NGC MS61, this example has survived in Mint State for nearly two centuries.
Design
The obverse features Liberty facing left, her hair arranged in curls and secured by a headband inscribed LIBERTY. Thirteen stars surround the portrait, representing the original states, while the date 1836 appears below. The distinctive Script 8 in the date identifies this example as a recognized variety of the year.
The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle with a shield across its breast, holding an olive branch and arrows in its talons. The inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the design, with the denomination 2 1/2 D. below. Unlike the preceding Capped Bust Quarter Eagle design, the Classic Head reverse does not include the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM.
