The American Silver Eagle bullion coin program began in 1986 and it  very quickly became an incredibly successful program, Collectors, investors, and dealers alike all wanted to own these coins, or have them in their inventory. The pricing was reasonable, and the designs were beautiful.
The obverse design utilized a rendition of the extremely popular Walking Liberty design. This exact design had been used on our half dollar coinage between 1916 and 1947. This beautiful design was created by Adolph Weinman, who also designed the Mercury Dime of that same era. .
A representation of Miss Liberty strides across the obverse of the coin going to the viewer’s left. She is wearing flowing robes around her, but an American flag is draped across both of her shoulders. Her right hand is extended forward as a friendly gesture, while her left arm clutches bundles of olive branches. The date the coin was struck is displayed on the lower periphery, underneath Miss Liberty. On the upper periphery is the word “LIBERTY,” while in the right open field is the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
The reverse uses US Mint Chief-Engraver John Mercanti’s Heraldic Eagle design, There is a large American bald eagle that has its wings outstretched and pointing upwards. The body of the eagle is protected by a shield. The eagle’s talons are filled with implements of war and peace. One talon is clutching arrows, while the other is holding an olive branch. As this design was originally created for a 1916-dated coin, the symbols of peace are dominant. Even though war was raging across Europe in 1916, America had not yet entered the fray.
Above the eagle are 13 five-pointed stars that are neatly arranged in a formation. Adorning the upper periphery are the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.” On the lower periphery are the words “1 OZ. FINE SILVER – ONE DOLLAR.”
This coin has been graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) and the insert displays the grade – MS69. NGC grades, authenticates, and encapsulates coins and their grading is widely accepted. The MS69 grade means that this coin is only one point away from perfection.
NGC is one of the major independent coin grading services and their consistent and accurate grading make NGC coins highly desirable in the numismatic marketplace.
