Introduction
The 2022-W 1 oz American Silver Eagle graded NGC PF69 Ultra Cameo is a near-perfect proof example from one of the United States Mint's most recognizable modern coin programs. Certified PF69 Ultra Cameo by Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), this West Point Mint issue features sharply frosted design elements against deeply mirrored fields. Containing one troy ounce of .999 fine silver, the 2022-W combines precious metal content with the modern Type 2 design introduced to the American Silver Eagle series in 2021.
History
The American Silver Eagle was introduced in 1986 following passage of the Liberty Coin Act of 1985. Created as the official silver bullion coin of the United States, the series became one of the most recognizable modern American coin programs. Proof editions are produced specifically for collectors using specially prepared dies and planchets to create highly detailed designs and contrasting surfaces.
In 2021, the United States Mint introduced the first major redesign of the American Silver Eagle since the series began. The original heraldic eagle reverse was replaced by a new design depicting a bald eagle preparing to land while carrying an oak branch. The 2022-W continued the Type 2 design in its second year. Struck at the West Point Mint and graded NGC PF69 Ultra Cameo, this example offers near-perfect preservation with the strong visual contrast associated with modern proof coinage.
Design
The obverse features Adolph A. Weinman's celebrated Walking Liberty design, originally created for the half dollar introduced in 1916. Liberty strides toward the rising sun while draped in the American flag and carrying branches of laurel and oak. The refreshed obverse introduced in 2021 more closely reflects Weinman's original artistic vision and includes his traditional artist mark. The inscriptions LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date 2022 complete the design.
The reverse, designed by Emily Damstra and sculpted by Michael Gaudioso, depicts a bald eagle preparing to land while carrying an oak branch in its talons. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1 OZ. FINE SILVER, and ONE DOLLAR surround the design. The W mintmark identifies the proof coin as a product of the West Point Mint.
