History
The American Gold Eagle series debuted in 1986 following the passage of the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. Since its introduction, the series has become one of the most recognized and widely collected gold coin programs in the world. Proof versions are struck using specially polished dies and planchets, producing sharp detail and reflective surfaces intended for collectors.
The 2026 issue commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Known as the Semiquincentennial, this national milestone celebrates two and a half centuries of American history. To mark the occasion, the United States Mint incorporated special elements into the design, including dual anniversary dates and a Liberty Bell privy mark symbolizing the nation’s enduring spirit of independence.
Design
The obverse features Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic depiction of Liberty striding forward while holding a torch and olive branch, representing enlightenment and peace. The Capitol building appears in the background with rays of sunlight radiating outward. For this anniversary release, the obverse includes the dual dates 1776–2026 to commemorate the 250-year milestone of American independence. A special Liberty Bell privy mark featuring the number “250” highlights the Semiquincentennial celebration and distinguishes this issue within the modern American Gold Eagle series.
The reverse displays a detailed portrait of a bald eagle, symbolizing strength and national pride. Surrounding inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and IN GOD WE TRUST, along with the coin’s weight and denomination.
