Introduction

The 1/4 oz 1776–2026 250th Anniversary Gold American Eagle celebrates the Semiquincentennial of the United States, marking 250 years since the nation’s founding. This special Proof issue features dual dates, 1776–2026, on the obverse and includes a Liberty Bell privy mark bearing the number “250.” Certified PCGS PR70DCAM, the coin represents a flawless example with deeply mirrored fields and frosted design elements that create exceptional contrast.
Combining historical symbolism with a perfect proof grade, this anniversary release offers strong appeal to collectors seeking modern commemorative gold coins tied to a significant national milestone.

History

The American Gold Eagle series was introduced in 1986 following the passage of the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. Since its debut, the series has become one of the most widely recognized gold coin programs in the world. Proof issues are specially produced for collectors using polished dies and carefully prepared planchets to create sharp details and mirrored finishes.
The 2026 issue commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Known as the Semiquincentennial, this national celebration highlights two and a half centuries of American history. To honor this milestone, the United States Mint incorporated special design elements including dual anniversary dates and a Liberty Bell privy mark symbolizing the nation’s enduring legacy of freedom. A Liberty Bell privy mark featuring the number “250” highlights the Semiquincentennial celebration and distinguishes this special anniversary release within the American Gold Eagle series.

Design

The obverse features Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ renowned depiction of Liberty striding forward while holding a torch and olive branch, representing enlightenment and peace. The Capitol building appears in the background while rays of sunlight extend behind Liberty. For this commemorative issue, the obverse includes the dual dates 1776–2026, recognizing the 250th anniversary of American independence.
The reverse displays a detailed portrait of a bald eagle, symbolizing strength and national pride. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and IN GOD WE TRUST, along with the coin’s denomination and weight.
