Introduction

The $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle BU (Dates Vary) offers an opportunity to own classic pre-1933 United States gold in uncirculated condition. Each coin contains approximately .24187 troy ounces of pure gold and features Christian Gobrecht’s enduring Liberty Head design. With dates and mintmarks varying according to availability, these coins combine fractional gold ownership with a series that spans nearly seven decades of American history.

History

The Liberty Head Half Eagle was introduced in 1839 and remained in production through 1908, giving Christian Gobrecht’s design a remarkable 70-year presence on the $5 denomination. During that time, the series witnessed westward expansion, the California Gold Rush, the Civil War, Reconstruction, and America’s transformation into an industrial and economic power.

Over the course of the series, Liberty Head Half Eagles were struck at Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans, San Francisco, Carson City, and Denver. Remarkably, the Liberty Head Half Eagle is the only U.S. coin series to have been produced at all seven of these historic Mint facilities. Dates and mintmarks vary according to availability, while BU examples offer the design in uncirculated condition without the wear associated with commercial circulation.

Design

The obverse features Liberty facing left, wearing a coronet inscribed with LIBERTY. Thirteen stars representing the original states surround her portrait, with the date positioned below. Gobrecht’s neoclassical portrait remained largely unchanged throughout the series, making it one of the most enduring designs in nineteenth-century American gold coinage.

The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings and a Union shield across its breast, holding an olive branch and arrows in its talons as symbols of peace and military preparedness. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FIVE D. identify the issuing nation and denomination. Earlier issues feature the original No Motto design, while IN GOD WE TRUST was added above the eagle beginning in 1866. Dates, mintmarks, and specific design types vary according to availability.
