History

Just as America has the American Bald Eagle as one of its national symbols, France has a ‘Rooster’ as one of theirs. These coins were struck starting in 1899 and ended in 1914, just at the outbreak of World War I. But their designs and the value of the French gold made these coins popular and desirable even during two world wars.
Most early American coins made of copper, silver, or gold, all portray an allegorical representation of “Miss Liberty,” which is an American ideal. But these French gold coins are no different.
Design

Artist J. C, Chaplain designed his own allegorical figure called “Marianne,” who represents the finest qualities of France and her people. Whereas on American coins the word, “LIBERTY,” is often seen, on French coins it is the ideals of “Liberty, Equality and Fraternity,” that Marianne represents to the French people and to the world at large.
The reverse of this beautiful gold coin depicts a Gallic Rooster, which symbolizes the qualities of bravery and strength, just as the American Bald Eagle symbolizes similar traits to America and the world.
The coins were struck in 22 carat gold (.9167 Fine Gold), and each will contain .1867 of a Troy Ounce of pure gold. Along with a handful of other similar European gold coins, these smaller value coins were the workhouse of commerce in early 20th Century Europe.
These beautiful French Rooster 20 Franc gold coins were struck at the venerable Monnaie de Paris, which was founded nearly 1,000 years before America began striking its own coinage. France has a very long history of creating its own beautiful and valuable gold coins.
This listing contains variously dated French 20 Franc Gold Rooster coinage. In varying degrees of circulation.
