Introduction
The 2026 1/4 oz Gold Perth Mint Lunar Horse celebrates the Year of the Horse in .9999 fine gold, pairing precious metal value with one of the Perth Mint’s most recognizable annual coin programs. Part of the Australian Lunar Series III, the coin brings the traditions of the Chinese zodiac to life through an original design created specifically for the 2026 release. History
The Perth Mint’s Australian Lunar program debuted in 1996 and has since grown into a celebrated series inspired by the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. Now in its third 12-year cycle, the program introduces new artwork for each zodiac year, giving every release its own identity while maintaining a connection to the larger collection.
The Horse is the seventh animal in the Chinese zodiac and is associated with independence, charisma, adventure, and spirited energy. For the 2026 design, Perth Mint artist Ing Ing Jong drew inspiration from traditional Chinese horse paintings, particularly their ability to convey movement, freedom, and strength. The result continues a program that has brought cultural symbolism and precious metal craftsmanship together for three decades.
Design
The reverse features a magnificent horse with elevated hooves, set against a landscape of mountains and grassland. The composition captures the strength and movement traditionally associated with the Horse and includes the Chinese character for “Horse,” the inscription HORSE 2026, and the Perth Mint’s “P” mintmark.
The obverse features Dan Thorne’s effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, accompanied by the coin’s weight, .9999 gold fineness, and monetary denomination. Struck in 1/4 troy ounce of pure gold, the 2026 Lunar Horse combines the enduring appeal of physical gold with artwork created to tell the story of its year in the Chinese zodiac.
