Introduction

The $2 1/2 Indian Head Quarter Eagle Certified MS62 combines historic U.S. gold coinage with Bela Lyon Pratt's distinctive incuse design. Struck in 90% gold, each coin contains approximately .1209 troy oz of pure gold and has been professionally certified in Mint State 62 condition. Dates and mintmarks vary based on available inventory.

History

The Indian Head Quarter Eagle was introduced in 1908 as part of a broader effort to bring a new artistic direction to American coinage. Designed by sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt, the coin introduced an innovative incuse format in which the principal design elements are recessed below the surface rather than raised above it.

Indian Head Quarter Eagles were issued from 1908 through 1915 before production was suspended for nearly a decade. Coinage resumed in 1925 and continued through 1929. Most issues were struck at the Philadelphia Mint, while select dates were produced at the Denver Mint.

Certified MS62 examples show no wear from circulation and retain Mint State characteristics, although contact marks and other minor surface imperfections may be present at this grade. Because dates vary, the specific year, mintmark, mintage, grading service, and individual appearance of the coin received may vary.

Design

The obverse features a Native American portrait wearing a feathered headdress. Thirteen stars surround the portrait, with LIBERTY above and the date below.

The reverse depicts an eagle perched on a bundle of arrows with an olive branch. The inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 2 1/2 DOLLARS. Denver issues carry a D mintmark on the reverse, while Philadelphia issues have no mintmark.
