Introduction

The $2.50 Indian Head Quarter Eagle is one of the most distinctive gold coins in United States numismatics. Designed by sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt and introduced in 1908, the coin is notable for its innovative incuse design, with the primary design elements recessed below the surface rather than raised above it. This example is certified MS64, indicating an uncirculated coin with no wear from circulation and strong overall visual quality for the grade. Dates and mintmarks vary based on availability.

History

The Indian Head Quarter Eagle was introduced in 1908 during a period of significant change in American gold coinage. Sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt created the design for both the $2.50 Quarter Eagle and $5 Half Eagle, using an unusual incuse technique that distinguished the coins from other circulating U.S. issues.

Indian Head Quarter Eagles were struck from 1908 through 1915 before production was suspended. Coinage resumed in 1925 and continued through 1929. The series was produced at the Philadelphia Mint, with select issues struck at the Denver Mint. Production ended after 1929 and was never resumed.

Design

The obverse features a left-facing Native American portrait wearing a feathered headdress. LIBERTY appears above the portrait, thirteen stars surround the design, and the date appears below. Unlike traditional raised-relief coinage, the portrait, lettering, stars, and date are recessed into the surface of the coin.

The reverse depicts a standing eagle perched on a bundle of arrows with an olive branch intertwined around them. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM appear above the eagle, while IN GOD WE TRUST and the denomination 2 1/2 DOLLARS complete the design. Denver issues carry a D mintmark on the reverse. The recessed devices and exposed fields give the Indian Head Quarter Eagle a distinctive appearance among U.S. gold coinage.
