Introduction

The $10 Gold Indian Eagle stands as one of the most admired and artistically bold designs in American numismatics. Struck in 90% gold and 10% copper, this coin was part of President Theodore Roosevelt’s early 20th-century effort to elevate U.S. coinage to the level of fine art. Its striking headdressed Liberty and majestic eagle symbolize a turning point in American design, merging classical elegance with bold national symbolism. Today, the Gold Indian Eagle remains a cornerstone for collectors who appreciate both its beauty and historical significance.

History

The Gold Indian Eagle was introduced in 1907 and struck until 1933 as part of the U.S. Mint’s pre-1933 gold coinage series. Designed by the celebrated sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, it emerged from Roosevelt’s vision to create “beautiful coins that would never be mistaken for those of any other nation.” The design was groundbreaking for its time, featuring a Native American headdress on Liberty—a powerful symbol of unity and respect for American heritage. Although production ceased during the Great Depression when the government ended gold coin circulation, surviving examples of the $10 Indian Eagle continue to represent one of the most innovative and aesthetically refined designs in U.S. coinage history.

Design

The obverse of the $10 Gold Indian Eagle features Liberty wearing a feathered war bonnet surrounded by thirteen stars and the word LIBERTY above. The reverse displays a standing bald eagle perched confidently on a bundle of arrows and an olive branch, representing both strength and peace. This design was notable for its bold relief and unique matte finish on early proofs, setting it apart from earlier U.S. gold issues. Each coin weighs 16.718 grams, measures approximately 27 mm in diameter, and contains .48375 troy ounces of pure gold. Its combination of sculptural depth, artistry, and historical importance makes the Gold Indian Eagle one of the most celebrated gold coins ever minted in the United States.
