shopping went well, on checkout, i tried to Place Order and it kept going towards the top of that section. on my computer it did NOT show the red banner about 'read and accept' so my time to order timed out the first time. next time, i scrolled the entire page and saw the red banner.

Introduction

The 1857-S $20 Liberty SSCA Bold S PCGS MS64 is one of the most historically significant Double Eagles available to collectors today. Recovered from the legendary SS Central America, often called the “Ship of Gold,” this coin represents a remarkable intersection of American history, maritime tragedy, and numismatic preservation. With its bold San Francisco mintmark and impressive Mint State grade, this Double Eagle stands as both a prized collectible and a tangible artifact of the California Gold Rush era.

History

The SS Central America sank in September 1857 during a powerful hurricane off the coast of the Carolinas while carrying tons of California gold to eastern banks. The loss of this shipment contributed to the financial panic of 1857, one of the most severe economic crises of the 19th century. For more than a century the treasure lay on the ocean floor until its dramatic recovery in the late 1980s and later expeditions. Coins recovered from the wreck, including the 1857-S Double Eagles, are among the best-preserved examples known because they were largely protected from circulation. The distinctive “Bold S” mintmark is a variety highly sought after by collectors and further enhances the desirability of these historic coins.

Design

The obverse features a classical portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with LIBERTY. Thirteen stars surround the portrait, symbolizing the original states, while the date appears below. Designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, the composition reflects the neoclassical artistic style favored during the mid-19th century.
The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with a shield across its chest, holding an olive branch and arrows. Above the eagle appears a semicircle of thirteen stars, while UNITED STATES OF AMERICA encircles the design and the denomination TWENTY D appears below. The San Francisco mintmark is positioned beneath the eagle, identifying the coin as part of the early gold coinage produced during the height of the California Gold Rush.
