Introduction
The 1876-CC $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle represents one of the most coveted frontier-era gold issues in American numismatics. Struck at the Carson City Mint, this coin embodies the rugged history of the American West and the mining boom that shaped Nevada’s economic rise. Graded PCGS MS61 with CAC approval, this example offers strong visual presence and historic importance from one of the most widely collected mint facilities in U.S. coinage.
History
By 1876, the Carson City Mint was converting bullion from the Comstock Lode and surrounding mining districts into circulating coinage. Double Eagles from Carson City were vital for banking, commerce, and export, and many entered active use domestically and overseas. Survival rates for higher-grade examples are limited due to circulation and later meltings. The 1876-CC issue stands as a tangible artifact of America’s westward expansion and the financial systems that supported it during the nation’s centennial year.
Design
Designed by James B. Longacre, the obverse features Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with LIBERTY, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original states. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield, clutching arrows and an olive branch beneath the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY D frame the reverse, while the distinctive CC mintmark beneath the eagle identifies its Carson City origin. The Liberty Head Double Eagle design remained a defining symbol of American gold coinage for decades.
