Introduction
The 1889 $1 Gold JD-2 Low Date is a highly collectible proof issue within the Liberty Head Gold Dollar series. Graded PCGS PR65 and approved by CAC, this example displays exceptional eye appeal, reflective fields, and strong contrast consistent with a high-end Gem Proof. The JD-2 Low Date variety adds an additional layer of rarity and distinction, making this coin particularly desirable among advanced collectors of proof gold coinage.
History
Proof gold dollars were struck in limited quantities for collectors during the late 19th century, often featuring meticulous production techniques and superior finishes. By 1889, the gold dollar denomination was nearing the end of its production life, having served since its introduction in 1849 following the California Gold Rush. The JD-2 Low Date variety represents a recognized die pairing within the series, distinguished by the positioning and style of the date. Surviving proof examples are scarce, and those with CAC approval are especially sought after for their quality and originality.
Design
The obverse features Liberty depicted as an Indian Princess, wearing a feathered headdress inscribed with LIBERTY. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the central portrait, with the date positioned below. This refined Type 3 design improved upon earlier versions by enhancing detail and overall balance.
The reverse displays the denomination 1 DOLLAR and the date within a wreath composed of cotton, wheat, corn, and tobacco, tied with a bow at the base. The agricultural wreath symbolizes the economic strength of the United States during the 19th century. The proof finish highlights the intricate detail of the design, producing mirrored fields and frosted devices that create a striking visual contrast.
