1908 $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle NGC MS66

Introduction
The 1908 $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle is a classic United States gold coin from the final year of the long-running Liberty Head series. Designed by U.S. Mint engraver Christian Gobrecht, the Liberty Head Half Eagle was produced from 1839 through 1908 and remains one of the most recognizable designs in American gold coinage. This 1908 example is graded NGC MS66, representing a Gem Uncirculated coin with no wear from circulation and exceptional overall preservation.
History
The Liberty Head Half Eagle debuted in 1839, replacing the earlier Classic Head design. Over nearly seven decades of production, the series was struck at seven U.S. Mint facilities and played an important role in American commerce during periods of economic expansion, westward migration, and major gold discoveries.
In 1908, the Philadelphia Mint struck 421,874 Liberty Head Half Eagles, marking the final year of the series. That same year, the denomination transitioned to Bela Lyon Pratt's Indian Head design, introduced as part of President Theodore Roosevelt's broader effort to modernize American coinage. As a final-year issue, the 1908 Liberty Head Half Eagle represents the conclusion of one of the longest-running designs in U.S. gold coinage.
Design
The obverse features Christian Gobrecht's left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. Her hair is gathered into a bun, while thirteen stars representing the original states surround the portrait and the date 1908 appears below.
The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings and a shield on its breast. The eagle holds an olive branch and arrows in its talons, while UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination FIVE D. surround the design. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST appears on a scroll above the eagle, identifying this coin as part of the With Motto design type introduced in 1866.
