History

The Mexican 50 Peso gold coin is one of the most well-known and desired world gold coins. The allure is the iconic and historic design as well as the gold content, which exceeds One Troy Ounce.
In 1921, the Mexican government decided to create and strike a beautiful coin to commemorate the centennial of Mexico’s independence from Spain. The coin was first struck in the 50 Pesos size, which is the largest denomination of the series. The 50 Peso coin contains 1.2057 Troy Ounces of pure gold and was designed by Emilio del Moral. He was inspired by the world-famous Winged Victory statue which sits atop the Independence Column, which is in Mexico City.

Design

The obverse depicts the Winged Victory figure holding a wreath symbolizing victory. There are mountains in the distance and Aztec symbolism around the upper periphery. The denomination, “50 PESOS,” and the weight “37.5 Gr ORO PURO” round out the elements on the obverse.
The reverse portrays an Eagle with a Snake in its mouth, atop a cactus are the symbols of Mexico’s Coat of Arms. The legend inscribed on it is “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS “ which translates to “UNITED MEXICAN STATES.”
The coins were struck each year between 1921 and 1947 when precious metal prices made striking the coin impractical for commerce. These early dates have considerably more value than the later dates.
The later struck coins all bear the 1947 date, so determining exactly when a 1947 coin was struck is impossible. There are a couple of scarce dates in the pre-1947 series.
